Meet the New FF

Now THIS is truly crazy. Two of my childhood idols together and wearing new uniforms to boot! Following the death of the Human Torch, Marvel Comics is going all out with unbelievable new uniforms, a new name (“FF” for “Future Foundation”), and a *gasp* new member – none other than Spider-Man! Oh, the Humanity! While the association between the web-slinger and the Cosmic Quarter goes back to before my time, it just seems so “alternate universe” to me. Who knows how long this weird union will last. And, what’s next? Galactus teaming up with the Avengers? Check out some of the soc med opinion on the issue over at CNN

Spontaneity pays off for Jordan Matter and his dancers. His photo project, Dancers Among Us, leverages the stark contrast between the dancers’ extreme athleticism and everyday situations and people in New York City. The project is ongoing and the “making of” video above is fascinating. I wouldn’t kick him out of my fountain! Find out more about Matter’s work at his site.

In Her Painting Prime at 94

Huge, permanent hat tip to Ms. Erma Winfield, 94 years young, creator of a 40 foot mural outside her Los Angeles home. The mural spans four seasons, with beautiful, primitive images from Ms. Winfield’s own memories. What a testament to a life fully lived! Check out the story in the Los Angeles Times here. I can only hope I can reach that level of creativity at that age, let alone reach that age!

One He-Man’s Trash …

… is another man’s treasure. I can only imagine the reaction of Robert Lamb when he stumbled on these gorgeous background story boards in a trash can. These boards apparently were from the first season of the animated show He-Man. I love the blue-scale tone and the sketchy, comic feel. I cannot believe these ended up in a trash can! Painting on a grand scale demands vibrancy and impact. Sable brushes won’t do, but an industrial strength spray system might. And slim pages of Fabriano cold-press just can’t hold a candle to a two-story white wallboarded expanse. Check out the gorgeous architectural color / textures of Katharina Grosse, now on display at Mass MoCA through October, 2011.

Will It Blend?

I can’t really tell what it would ride like, but this Nissan IV concept car is, well, a bit eye-catching. The ultra lightweight car was designed for 1,000 pound challenge at the 2010 LA Auto Show. It looks about 2035, with electric power, and the use of ”organic synthetics” – parts grown like pumpkins and rutabegas. A totally natural process, theoretically 100% sustainable and carbon-neutral. Seats for four. The car also sports a photo-voltaic rooftop, as well as a regenerative capacitor technology that returns 60% of kinetic energy spent.

I’ll be planting one next year.

Out of Sight is a truly beautiful little gem of an animated piece. It is the creation of three students from the National Taiwan University of the Arts. I am so thrilled I stumbled onto it. It pleased my sense of sight and sound, and evoked the rest of my senses as well. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
